MACBETH

Returning from a victorious battle, the title character (Felix Omozusi) encounters a trio of witches that seem to know him and who make several odd predictions—including that he himself shall become king. They vanish when he seeks to question them further, and he immediately learns of a promotion that comes to him just as they foretold.

Goaded by his venal, ambitious wife (Kenya Wilson), Macbeth embarks on a murderous quest for the throne. Originally published and performed in the early 1600’s, the tragedy’s themes of treachery, unrestrained ambition, and self–destructive hubris have an unsettling resonance in modern times.

Produced in collaboration with Theatre of the Living Word, MACBETH is directed by TLW’s Executive Director Marlon Campbell, who also served as Videographer and Production Designer. Featured players include AUDELCO Award-winner Fulton C. Hodges, Ria Alexander, Deanna Mungin, Jade Mason, Benjamin Campbell, Simone Black, Juanita Faulkner, LA Wright, Tony Paterniti, Darnell Shelton, Vincent J. Cheatham, Marc Gateau, (TLW Associate Director) Patrick Tomlinson, and (CART Executive Director) Rudolph Shaw. Brian A. Simmons turns in a particularly moving performance in the role of Macduff.

Circumstances necessitated the change from a planned live stage production to one captured on video for digital distribution. Rehearsals took place on Zoom, commencing in May of 2020. Performances were captured under socially-distanced conditions, with strict compliance to NYCDOH/CDC Health Safety protocols. While this clearly presented a number of logistical challenges, the change of medium and format also provided intriguing artistic opportunities.

Theatre of the Living Word began presenting plays to the Southeast Queens community in the Spring of 1986, ably led by the late Millicent Jones. Mr. Campbell succeeded her in 2005, and was recently named Executive Theatre Director of the Year by Success in the Arts (SITA). With an eye to the future, young people are involved in every aspect of TLW productions, both onstage and behind the scenes. TLW/CART’s presentation of MACBETH can be viewed on both Facebook and YouTube. In lieu of tickets, donations are happily accepted through PayPal. Now, On with the Show!
