Caribbean American Repertory Theatre (CART), in collaboration with Theatre of the Living Word (TLW), is pleased to present the classic South African comedy SIZWE BANSI IS DEAD. This cleverly crafted farce boldly confronts issues of race, class, identity, and legacy during the apartheid era.
Into the studio of a world-wise Photographer (played by CART Executive Director Rudolph Shaw), enters a nervous, well-dressed, and somewhat mysterious man (Fulton C. Hodges) commissioning a portrait. The outrageous story that unfolds reveals many secrets, depicting the challenges and inhumanity of the apartheid system through a compassionate, humorous window into the lives of everyday people coping with an upside-down society. The featured performers are each recipients of the prestigious AUDELCO Award (which celebrates excellence in Black Theatre), and have portrayed these complex characters on a number of stages throughout New York City.
Direction and Production Design are by TLW Executive Director Marlon Campbell. Sipho Joseph Mhlanga serves as Stage Manager and Dialect Coach. The Tony Award-winning script is by legendary playwright Athol Fugard, written collaboratively with two South African actors, John Kani, and Winston Ntshona, who also appeared in the original stage production.
